Jim McConnell (Gary Sinise) was scheduled to lead the first manned mission to Mars with his wife Maggie (Kim Delaney). Her untimely death from cancer leaves him in a whirl of depression and seemingly too unstable to proceed. Command is given instead to his buddy Luke Graham (Don Cheadle). Ten months into the mission when Luke and his crew discover a mysterious structure on the Martian surface a sudden tornado kills all but Luke. Jim, scientist Phil Ohlmyer (Jerry O'Connell) and married astronauts Woody Blake (Tim Robbins) and Terri Fisher (Connie Nielsen) are up on the space station monitoring the mission. They persuade NASA to send them to respond to Luke’s last garbled transmission. The challenges of the rescue mission are many but eventually they succeed in finding Luke still alive and all too informed about the workings of the structure. The intrepid space travelers must then choose whether they wish to discover the secrets of the alien construct or to flee back to Earth.
